May West is an exciting new music festival that will take place in Glasgow across the May Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th May.

Staged at Glasgow Green in the heart of the city, and presented by Beyond Events in association with WEST Brewery.

With an estimated capacity of 3,000 in this inaugural year, May West aims to fill a gap in the city’s events landscape for a musically-eclectic, entertainment-rich boutique festival complemented by fantastic food from a number of Glasgow’s favourite restaurateurs and a tantalisingly tasty drinks offering.

First up on the musical offering, THE STRANGLERS will make a very special headline appearance on the Saturday. As one of the UK’s most continuously-successful bands, the quintessentially new wave four piece, fronted by the charismatic Hugh Cornwell and Jean-Jacques Burnel, have an astounding back catalogue spanning 17 UK Top 40 albums and 23 UK Top 40 singles including classics such as ‘Peaches’, ‘Golden Brown’, ‘Always the Sun’ and ‘No More Heroes’ to name a few.

PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING are a multi award winning London-based duo whose unique and spell-binding live AV transmissions are presented in a music festival arena to simply stunning effect. Using samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material around live drums, guitar, banjo and electronics – beaming our past back at us through vintage TV sets and state of the art modern video projection devices.

WARD THOMAS are amongst the UK’s most successful new country crossover musicians. Having spent recent years recording in Nashville, the duo came into their own with the release of ‘Cartwheels’, their sensational second album of the same name which topped the UK album chart late 2016, the first ever UK country act to do so. As a live act, the duo (and modest backing band) extol their brand of Americana with a captivating authenticity, and tight, pitch perfect harmonies combined with accomplished storytelling sees WARD THOMAS epitomise the blossoming state of the UK’s country music scene.

TURIN BRAKES’ tangled, twisty take on acoustic rock sounds confident rather than battered by age. Trademark West-Coast acoustic guitar, gospel-tinged folk-pop harmonies and lush cinematic productions set against the warmth and intimacy of stories that are both hopeful and unsettling has been TURIN BRAKES’ trademark through the years.

Underpinning May West’s musically diverse ethos, DREADZONE are also confirmed to bring their eclectic fusion of dub, reggae, electronic dance, folk and rock to the festival. One of the most energetic, exciting and powerful live bands to emerge from the post-rave scene, their old skool dread sound can be heard in full effect on brand new album ‘Dread Times’.

RODDY HART & THE LONESOME FIRE released their second album ‘Swithering’ to widespread acclaim in November 2017. Respected for his excellent BBC Radio Scotland show, as well as curating and hosting tribute nights to legendary artists – the recent ‘Forever Young: A 70th Birthday Tribute To Bob Dylan’ project for Celtic Connections was globally lauded.

Finally, for now, but with lots more still to be announced, the 25-strong GLASGOW GOSPEL CHOIR will put the spine tingling into spiritual at Glasgow Green in May. Expect a rousing repertoire of traditional Gospel, African songs, Motown, Blues and energetic takes on modern classics as the community choir, founded by Liberian Jerry Boweh, deliver a must-hear performance to warm heart and soul.

Musical purveyance aside, tastebuds can expect to be tickled too with Glasgow’s famous WEST BREWERY involved. Enjoy the full array of award-winning German-inspired beers in the festival’s beer hall, as well as many of Scotland’s other finest craft brews plus lots of fine malt whiskies and the best home grown gin. What’s more, some of Glasgow’s finest food operators including THE KELBOURNE SAINT, THE CRAFTY PIG and WEST ON THE GREEN plus other foodie friends from across the city will serve up the finest festival fayre. And with heaps of fun, culturally-rich entertainment on offer including comedy, theatre and opera, May West is a refreshing new addition to Glasgow’s festival landscape.
